1. First Important Lesson - “Know The Cleaning Lady”

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

“Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “hello.”

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. Second Important Lesson - “Pickup In The Rain”

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home.

A special note was attached. It read: “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.”

3. Third Important Lesson - “Remember Those Who Serve”
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. “How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “50¢,” replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.

“Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. “35¢!” she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left.

When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4. Fourth Important Lesson - “The Obstacles In Our Path”

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand - “Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.”

5. Fifth Important Lesson - “Giving When It Counts”

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year-old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes, I’ll do it if it will save her.”

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away?”.

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

The Falling Man

One of the most haunting images captured from 9/11, it shows a man free-falling after he has jumped from one of the windows of North Tower. He was one of the people they call “Jumpers”, who chose to jump to their death rather than get suffocated by the smoke or get buried under the rubble. Some called them cowards, while some sensationalized them as tragic symbols of 9/11. But the fact of the matter is, it was a hard choice for anyone to make, and one can not really judge the decisions a person makes in times like these.

People, you rant so much about how you have a hard time making choices. Whether you should work on your assignment or go out with your friends. Whether you should date this guy or that guy. Whether you should break up with your boyfriend or not. Whether you should wear the pink blouse or the baby blue one. Imagine the choice this man had to make.

A couple of weeks have gone by since the floods in Pakistan have flowed and the number of people effected by this are staggering & record breaking.

Over 20 MILLION PEOPLE.

That is MORE THAN THE COMBINED TOTAL of the 2004 Tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the American Katrina disaster.

How many of you knew about this? It’s a shame at the extreme lack of coverage on this horrific disaster. Pakistan is getting MINIMAL help.

Ignorance never ends, a recent poll was taken in America on whether if they would donate or have donated to Pakistan or not. 67% DO NOT wish or want to help Pakistan. 67%.

And as for the donations that are being sent… 60% of aid needed now, has not been delivered. Who has them & why haven’t they reached the public?

I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. My city is located in the south region of Pakistan (Sindh province). I can not fathom the words….The amount of hurt I am feeling.

No one is helping.

I try to blog about it daily…only getting a few notes or so..I post a picture of myself and income the notes and comments. What I’m trying to say is, Please…take note of this. These people are innocent and now they are homeless and sick. Children are dying quickly due to the lack of care. People have drowned, crops are ruined..animals are dead, & homes are gone. It is being speculated that my city will eventually drown since it’s already low. The floods haven’t hurt my region yet but they have affected my friends & families home and so many other innocent people.

This picture breaks my heart..I want you all to look at this picture. What do you see?

Do you see terrorists? Do you see future killers? Do you see another plot against America? Do you see that in those mosquitoes that can possibly and most likely have left diseases such as malaria? Do you see harm in that empty bottle?

Extremists are the ones to blame, not Muslims. Why should we be left hopeless? We didn’t do anything.

And as for the Qu’ran burning this weekend in Florida, I believe….

The thought of that night makes me cry. Do you all understand the severity and ignorance of that act? Why isn’t anyone stopping them? My religion, my faith didn’t hurt you. EXTREMISTS DID. They are NOT religious. My faith is NOT a cult.

I don’t know what to do. I honestly don’t know. I’ve never felt this helpless. No one is helping, no one cares. Fuck neither do my own best friends know much about this.

Just look at this picture and think about what you’ve just read.

Help. Please.

If you can…I’m not asking for a shitload of cash. But please, try to donate. Donating to UNICEF will send aid to children. Donate to the Red Cross &the UN Foundation. I trust the most in these three foundations, they’ve actually managed to send and successfully help the victims.

One-fifth of the country is under water; 20 million+ people are homeless. All I ask if for you to help a little and spread awareness.

My story unfolds - it’s time to speak through the silence.

My whole life - I’ve lived w/constant arguing and bickering from my parents. It lead to the point, where I’d be so scared. I’d hide in my closet and cry. But throughout my whole life, I’d hide this part of me. This part of my life - from people at school & family members. No one knew how much my parents arguments effected me, especially my parents, and my siblings. I always kept it to myself; hoping that it’d all just go away - but it never did. It never will.
The past couple of months, my parents relationship got even worse. To the point where they didn’t even stay in the same room, or lay eyes on eachother. It was fine for me - because I didn’t have to hear them yell and whatnot. But it still hurt to see them this way. Two people that once loved eachother, were complete strangers living in one house.

I came home one day after school w/ my dad and my brother. I got a bowl of cereal and went into my room to check fb/tumblr, you know.. the daily things. A couple minutes later, my mom comes into my room - almost in tears.. asking “Where is your father?”. I was so worried and confused bout why my mom was like this. But I told her where my dad was, and she went off looking for him. I sat there in my chair, wondering what was going on and what was going to happen.

Soon, I heard yells from the kitchen. My heart stopped. Of course, I’ve heard them yell before, but this was the first time they tlkd to eachother in months. I ran into the kitchen to see what all the fuss was about.. and just as I was walking into the kitchen - my brother walked out the front door, closing it behind him. As I stood in the kitchen, my mom and dad pushed passed me - yelling in Tagalog (Filipino Language). “Why don’t you get a job?” ”Why don’t you help out w/your family? “I’m tired of working three jobs.” “I can’t do this anymore” “Divorce.” - All this was coming from my mom, who was yelling at my dad. Tears began to fall as I sat on the kitchen floor. Why is this happening..again? Why won’t they stop? All these questions filled my head as the tears kept falling.

I couldn’t stand hearing them yell any longer, so I ran to the backyard and sat near our pond. My parents were in their room at this point. I didn’t want to be there anymore. I didn’t want to hear them yell. Luckily, I had my cell phone in my pocket, so I began to call one of my friends. No answer. Thoughts about running away were in my head, but something told me not to go. So I just sat there, w/tears that overflowed my face - waiting for this to pass by.

Suddenly - My mom screams out loud.

I didn’t think much of it - because I knew they were arguing, but then. She screams again - even louder.

My heart dropped. I ran as fast as I could inside the house. I get to the hallway, where the screaming is coming from - and I drop to the ground.

A gun.

He held it up against my mom’s head, threatening to pull the trigger. He yelled ”YOU WANT TO LEAVE ME,RIGHT? THEN HERE. HERE.”

I cried, screamed, yelled, the loudest I could. The hardest I could. “PAPA STOP!!!!!!!!!!!! PAPA STOP!!!!!!!!!! MOMM!!!!!!!!!!!” I yelled for my brother. “JOSEPHHH. WHERE ARE YOU. WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU.” I looked around me, and I realized that he wasn’t there. That I was alone. That I was alone w/ my parents. and a gun.

My mom began to yell at my dad.. “See what you’re doing to your children. See what you did to your daughter. You hurt her. LOOK AT HER.”

My dad looked at me. But he still held the gun to her head.

I got the strength to get up and run to my mom. I ran in front of her - getting in between her and the gun. “Don’t hurt my mom!!!!!!!!!”, I yelled at my dad.

My dad finally put the gun in his pocket. Tears were overflowing. My mom held me in her arms as I was crying - and she began yelling at my dad again “Look what you did.” By doing this - it pissed off my dad, he was beginning to reach for his gun again.

He stopped. He tried to grab me out of my mom’s hands and hold me. But we - me and my mom - both pushed away.
We were able to go into my mom’s room and lock the door behind us - leaving my dad in the hallway. My mom tried looking for her keys and purse - telling me that we were going to leave. We were going somewhere - anywhere, but here.

But my dad kept banging on the door. We were forced to open it, knowing that he had a gun in his possession.

“Where do you think you are going?” My mom dropped her things. She was in tears. “I love you.” my dad said to me and my mom.

That wasn’t love. How could he possibly say these words after what he just did?

“Leave. Get out of my room.” said my mom. I pushed my dad out of the room, who was trying to give me a hug. I didn’t know to see him. I didn’t want him to touch me. I wanted him to leave.
“Mommah.” - I looked at my mom. She held me in her arms “Don’t cry, Anak. Mommah’s strong.” I began crying even louder and harder than I did before.

My heart broke, as I thought about the one person I loved the most, who was almost taken away from me.

“Mommah. Please don’t leave me.” I cried to my mom. “Anak. I’m never going to leave you.”

Those words, will always bring tears to my eyes (like right now).
A few minutes later, my brother walked back through the front door. I started to yell and scream at him. “WHERE WERE YOU. I NEEDED YOU, and YOU WERENT THERE.” I looked at my brother - he had tears in his eyes.

I suddenly realized - that it hurt him to see my parents like this. It hurt him all along.

….This was nearly 6 months ago. How is my family holding up? My parents haven’t communicated w/eachother since that day. And I’m fine with that. Nothings the same anymore. Nothings right. My relationship w/my father has broken apart. I can’t look at him the same. They say, never hate your parents. But, it’s kinda hard for me not to.

That day, God was watching. God was protecting me and my mom. Lord, Thank you so much. ♥

Oh, Later that night - my uncle came and got the gun. And we figured out that it had no bullets. But the fact that my father would even think about doing what he was going to do - breaks my heart. That pain will never, go away.

Burger King Introduces A ‘Musical Shower’ Booth At Their New Restaurant In Tokyo

Apparently the American fast food giants haven’t had the best of luck in Japan, but after withdrawing from the market a while ago, Burger King is back with a new ‘upscale’ joint in Tokyo that also introduces their first ‘Musical Shower’ booth. Instead of a jukebox you’ll find an iPod/iPhone dock embedded in the wall that let’s you play your own music as loud as you want it.

But what makes the system particularly neat is the use of a special speaker/reflector hanging above the table which pretty much ensures that only the people sitting in the booth can hear the music being played.

This is the boy, Matthew Shepard. On October 7, 1998 Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson lead him to a remote area east of Laramie where they demonstrated unimaginable acts of brutality . Matthew was tied to a split-rail fence where he was beaten and left to die in the cold of the night. Almost 18 hours later he was found by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. Matthew died on October 12 at 12:53 am at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. Murdered because he was gay.

SYDNEY - In those bleak moments when the lost souls stood atop the cliff, wondering whether to jump, the sound of the wind and the waves was broken by a soft voice. “Why don’t you come and have a cup of tea?” the stranger would ask. And when they turned to him, his smile was often their salvation.

For almost 50 years, Don Ritchie has lived across the street from Australia’s most notorious suicide spot, a rocky cliff at the entrance to Sydney Harbour called The Gap. And in that time, the man widely regarded as a guardian angel has shepherded countless people away from the edge.

What some consider grim, Ritchie considers a gift. How wonderful, the former life insurance salesman says, to save so many. How wonderful to sell them life.

“You can’t just sit there and watch them,” says Ritchie, now 84, perched on his beloved green leather chair, from which he keeps a watchful eye on the cliff outside. “You gotta try and save them. It’s pretty simple.”

Since the 1800s, Australians have flocked to The Gap to end their lives, with little more than a 3-foot (1 meter) fence separating them from the edge. Local officials say about one person a week commits suicide there, and in January, the Woollahra Council applied for 2.1 million Australian dollars ($1.7 million) in federal funding to build a higher fence and overhaul security.

In the meantime, Ritchie keeps up his voluntary watch. The council recently named Ritchie and Moya, his wife of 58 years, 2010’s Citizens of the Year.

He’s saved 160 people, according to the official tally, but that’s only an estimate. Ritchie doesn’t keep count. He just knows he’s watched far more walk away from the edge than go over it.

Dianne Gaddin likes to believe Ritchie was at her daughter’s side before she jumped in 2005. Though he can’t remember now, she is comforted by the idea that Tracy felt his warmth in her final moments.

“He’s an angel,” she says. “Most people would be too afraid to do anything and would probably sooner turn away and run away. But he had the courage and the charisma and the care and the magnetism to reach people who were coming to the end of their tether.”

Each morning, he climbs out of bed, pads over to the bedroom window of his modest, two-story home, and scans the cliff. If he spots anyone standing alone too close to the precipice, he hurries to their side.

Some he speaks with are fighting medical problems, others suffering mental illness. Sometimes, the ones who jump leave behind reminders of themselves on the edge — notes, wallets, shoes. Ritchie once rushed over to help a man on crutches. By the time he arrived, the crutches were all that remained.

In his younger years, he would occasionally climb the fence to hold people back while Moya called the police. He would help rescue crews haul up the bodies of those who couldn’t be saved. And he would invite the rescuers back to his house afterward for a comforting drink.

It all nearly cost him his life once. A chilling picture captured decades ago by a local news photographer shows Ritchie struggling with a woman, inches from the edge. The woman is seen trying to launch herself over the side — with Ritchie the only thing between her and the abyss. Had she been successful, he would have gone over, too.

These days, he keeps a safer distance. The council installed security cameras this year and the invention of mobile phones means someone often calls for help before he crosses the street.

But he remains available to lend an ear, though he never tries to counsel, advise or pry. He just gives them a warm smile, asks if they’d like to talk and invites them back to his house for tea. Sometimes, they join him.

“I’m offering them an alternative, really,” Ritchie says. “I always act in a friendly manner. I smile.”

A smile cannot, of course, save everyone; the motivations behind suicide are too varied. But simple kindness can be surprisingly effective. Mental health professionals tell the story of a note left behind by a man who jumped off San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way to the bridge, the man wrote, I will not jump.

Kevin Hines wishes someone like Ritchie was there the day he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000. For 40 agonizing minutes, the then-19-year-old paced the bridge, weeping, and hoping someone would ask him what was wrong. One tourist finally approached — but simply asked him to take her picture. Moments later, he jumped.

Hines, who suffers from bipolar disorder, was severely injured, but eventually recovered. Today he says if one person had shown they were not blind to his pain, he probably would never have jumped.

“A smile can go a long way — caring can go even further. And the fact that he offers them tea and he just listens, he’s really all they wanted,” Hines says. “He’s all a lot of suicidal people want.”

In 2006, the government recognized Ritchie’s efforts with a Medal of the Order of Australia, among the nation’s highest civilian honors. It hangs on his living room wall above a painting of a sunshine someone left in his mailbox. On it is a message calling Ritchie “an angel that walks amongst us.”

He smiles bashfully. “It makes you — oh, I don’t know,” he says, looking away. “I feel happy about it.”

But he speaks readily and fondly of one woman he saved, who came back to thank him. He spotted her sitting alone one day, her purse already beyond the fence. He invited her to his house to meet Moya and have tea. The couple listened to her problems and shared breakfast with her. Eventually, her mood improved and she drove home.

A couple of months later, she returned with a bottle of champagne. And about once a year, she visits or writes, assuring them she is happy and well.

There have been a few, though, that he could not save. One teenager ignored his coaxings and suddenly jumped. A wind blew the boy’s hat into Ritchie’s outstretched hand.

He later found out the teen had lived next door, years earlier. His mother brought Ritchie flowers and thanked him for trying. If you couldn’t have talked him out of it, she told him, no one could.

Despite all he has seen, he says he is not haunted by the ones who were lost. He cannot remember the first suicide he witnessed, and none have plagued his nightmares. He says he does his best with each person, and if he loses one, he accepts that there was nothing more he could have done.

Nor have he and Moya ever felt burdened by the location of their home.

“I think, ‘Isn’t it wonderful that we live here and we can help people?’” Moya says, her husband nodding in agreement.

Their life has been a good one, they say. They raised three beautiful daughters and now have three grandchildren to adore. They have traveled the world, and their home is decorated with statues and masks from their journeys. Ritchie proudly points out a dried, shellacked piranha — a souvenir from their vacation to the Amazon, where he insisted on swimming with the creatures (to Moya’s dismay).

Until about a year ago, the former Navy seaman enjoyed a busy social life, regularly lunching with friends. But battles with cancer and his advancing years have taken their toll, and now he spends most days at home with Moya, buried in a good book. His current read: the Dalai Lama’s “The Art of Happiness.”

Every now and then, he looks up from his books to scan the horizon for anyone who might need him. He’ll keep doing so, he says, for as long as he’s here.

And when he’s not?

He chuckles softly.

“I imagine somebody else will come along and do what I’ve been doing.”

He gazes through the glass door to the cliff outside. And his face is lit with a smile.

of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will
suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his

6 Years ago .... me - a 8 years old kid waiting for her monther to come back from work.
My mother - a divorced woman that work 18/24 hour on a day to get best food, clothes, school and all others for her shield (me). In spring, a cloudy day ... few days before mother's day i was home trying to make my mother a present. While i was having fun with my friends she was working hard to make my life wonderful. That day i waited for her till 2 am - a late hour for that age - but she didn't came. I fell asleep and i dreamed her. While outside was raining i was sleeping deep. Next day my aunt came to me (we were living with my aunt) and told me to get up off bed because she wanted to give me something. She gave me my mother's ring and she told me exactly this words : "Your mother is an angel now" - and she started to cry. At that moment i didn't know what really happened but i started to cry too.

After a lot of thinking many thoughts about my mother crossed my mind. When i understand what really happend and understand that i will never see my mother again... never speak to her again... never... All moments spent with her just .... just like disappeared .... I felt alone .... After few years when I could understand my father told me how my mother died.... in a car accident when she was in the way to home... just few seconds..... and you can lose everything....

Your mother would do anything to give you a good life... But what would you do just to show her that you love her ? -because this is what makes her happy... your love for her.

I can see that somewhere out there people are afraid of being different from others. They do not want to feel alienated. They resort to being like one another, otherwise, they'll be seen as deviants.

As the matter of fact, we tend to eliminate those who are different from others in order to protect ourselves.

Turn into a homogeneous crowd? Running after fashion, even though deep inside we find it strange at first sight we still pull this & that, closing an eye on originality to make ourselves feel 'cool' in the crowd. But why? I find it appalling after all.

Where has this whole being individualistic thing gone to? & I'm not even empathizing on fashion, just the thoughts that run through your minds today. Is the first thing you ask yourself "What will others think?" coz you're afraid people will call you downright nuts if you were to have something irregular in mind? Think about it.

Guess it's society, expressing yourself in your own individulatistc way is no longer extraordinary.
